Archbishop Oscar Romero, Assassinated by right wing security forces on March 24, 1980

Yesterday, the National Security Archive posted 12 documents as part of an Electronic Briefing Book to recognize the 31st anniversary of the assassination of Archibishop of San Salvador, El Salvador Oscar Romero. This posting also follows President Obama’s visit to Romero’s grave on the evening of March 23 where the President spoke of increasing security concerns and immigration.

One of the most fascinating documents include a U.S. embassy cable reporting on Archbishop Romero’s homily on March 23rd, where he famously implored, “In the name of God, in the name of this suffering people whose cries rise to heaven more loudly each day, I implore you, I beg you, I order you in the name of God: stop the repression!”
