A picture taken, 27 June 1995, shows the front page of “The Ethiopian Herald” with pictures of the foiled assassination attempt by the Egyptian Islamic Jihad against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak as his motorcade drove from the Addis Ababa airport on his way to the opening of the summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) 25 June. Mubaraks bulletproof limousine and a malfunctioning grenade launcher frustrated the attack. The leader of the plot Mustafa Hamza, a senior Egyptian member of the Al-Qaeda and commander to the military branch of the Islamic Group received assistance from Sudanese intelligence services, which smuggled weapons into their embassy in Ethiopia. The plotters had been planning the attack for more than a year, even marrying local women in Ethiopia. Back in Egypt, Mubarak launched a ruthless campaign to crush Islamic movements surviving another nine assassination plots against him.
